Can I Ask the Examiner to Repeat the Question in the IELTS Speaking Test?
Many IELTS candidates wonder: is it okay to ask the examiner to repeat a question? One of our enrolled members recently asked this very question. The short answer is yes—but with a few important points to keep in mind.
Point 1: How You Ask Matters
Imagine the examiner has just asked a question. Consider these possible responses:
- Candidate A: “What?”
- Candidate B: “Say that again.”
- Candidate C: “Sorry, would you mind repeating that – I didn’t quite follow you?”
Quick Tip: Candidate C is the best choice. Candidate A sounds rude and abrupt, and Candidate B is technically correct but comes across as commanding. Candidate C is polite and demonstrates good communication skills.
Point 2: It Depends on the Part of the Test
In Part 1 of the speaking test, examiners can only repeat the question—they cannot explain words or rephrase. They will usually repeat a question just once before moving on.
In Part 3, examiners can provide more help. They are allowed to explain words, rephrase questions, and repeat multiple times if necessary.
Polite Phrases to Use
- “Sorry, could you repeat that, please?”
- “Could you say that again?”
Avoid: abrupt responses like “What?” or commands like “Say that again.” Politeness shows confidence and interpersonal skills, which examiners notice.
Final Advice
✅ Listen carefully the first time and only ask for repetition when needed.
✅ Practise polite requests so you feel natural and confident during the exam.
✅ Remember: asking politely can actually work in your favour, showing that you can communicate effectively in English.
