It is the job of a new migrant to adopt the culture of their new country. Do you agree?
Migrants should make every effort to integrate into the new society in which they live; however, that country’s government should also offer support to new arrivals as the following explains.
Different cultures have different codes of conduct, so in order to successfully settle in to a new culture it is important that immigrants develop a good understanding of the habits and customs of that society. Behaviour which is acceptable in one culture can be offensive in another; for example, wearing shoes inside the home.
It is also important for new migrants to be able to speak the language of their new country as this makes it much easier for them to interact with people and deal with day to day problems. Moreover, it allows them to find suitable employment. It is a common situation for recent migrants, even highly educated individuals, to be unable to pursue their career in their new country due to language difficulties.
On the other hand, governments should also offer adequate support to new arrivals to ensure they have the best opportunity to acclimatise to their new environment. Generally countries wish to attract new migrants because they want them to contribute to the economy and success of that country. Governments should therefore offer training, such as language learning, job search skills and cultural understanding.
